1. Which bottle to use?

Let’s begin with the easiest part.
Buy a glass bottle or one made from stainless steel.

Glass is great to drink from. The taste is completely different than when you’re drinking from a plastic bottle. You don’t taste the plastic anymore. Your water suddenly becomes natural and tasty.
One of the biggest advantages is that you can see what you are drinking. You can see if there is any dirt in the bottle or if the color of the water is a little bit different. You can also find out soon enough if the bottle needs to be cleaned. Buy a non-plastic bottle brush and clean it every day for the best quality of water possible,
A disadvantage of glass is the weight. It’s heavier than plastic and stainless steel. For home use, it’s fine, but if you want to take two liters of water in your backpack, it will be heavy.
A second disadvantage is fragility. If you drop it, it can easily break into hundreds of pieces. Of course, there are many different types of glass bottles, from very thin to very thick glass. The thinner the lighter and the thicker the less fragile. Please make sure you clean the cap too. If it is made from cork, it may contain bacteria after every use. The same is true for metal. And a metal cap may also develop rust if it stays in contact with water for a longer period of time.

Stainless steel

The big advantage of stainless steel is that it is so light. You can easily put it in your backpack and take it with you. On hot days, it will keep your water cooler and of course, it is less fragile than glass. A drop can harm the bottle, but it won’t break and you can still use it afterwards. The disadvantage is that you can not look at the water you’re drinking. You cannot see through the stainless steal, so you can also not see whether you cleaned the bottle well enough or whether the water is good quality.

Cleaning your bottle depends on the size of the opening. You may be able to use a dishwashing brush if the opening is big enough. Otherwise, use a bottle brush.
But please, in both cases, make sure that it is a non-plastic brush! We were just trying to solve the plastic problem, right?

You can re-use your bottle over and over again. Just clean it regularly.
You can also just use glass jars from the supermarket. For example, beans, tomato sauce, apple juice and other products come in glass jars. Give it a decent clean, soak the label off, and you’ve got yourself a free re-used water bottle.

2. Home tapped water

If you’re lucky, you live in a country where the drinking water from the tap is very good quality.
Or you might even be luckier to live in a village where the water from a natural spring is collected and comes straight out of your tap.
If you don’t live in places like this, don’t worry! You can always decide to filter the water that comes out of the tap. The first step is to find a report on the water quality in your town and decide on what you want to remove from the water in order to the drink the it. If the water quality report is satisfactory to you, great!
If you’re not happy, look to improve the the quality of your home water with a filter.

3. Home water filters

To improve the quality of your home water, it’s best to install a water filter on your kitchen tap. Or you can even go further and put several filters on the other taps in the house. In the last case, it might be better to think about a general filter that you install at the point the water comes into your house, before it divides into seperate directions to the various taps.

There are several types of water filters on the market, all of different quality. You can imagine that the cheapest one will not take out all the bad stuff and that a more expensive filter does a lot more.
The question is: what is your goal? What do you want to reduce? Fluoride, chalk, fluorine, other toxins? Go the the website of your water company or call the company itself and ask for the composition of your drinking water. They are obligated to provide that information to customers. Study the list and decide what shouldn’t belong in the water you drink.
Once you have decided, you only have to find a decent filter on the market. There are loads of them. Don’t just buy one, but find out what it promises, compare prices, look for reviews and make sure you get a good warranty. And it is also very important that the filter of your choice only reduces the bad things. It should absolutely preserve the healthy minerals in drinking water.

So this is your action list:

– find the composition of your tap water
– decide what you want to filter out of your water
– research water filters and find a satisfactory solution
– buy and install that filter
– enjoy your improved water. Doesn’t it taste so much better?

4. Buy a mobile water filter

This is perfect for the people who are travelling, not always at home or that just don’t like to walk to the tap all the time.
There are many kinds of mobile water filters. You have the big ones that store 10 liters of water that you can easily take into the garden. The old jerrycan idea. Most of them have a tap on them to refill your glass or bottle straight away. You can even take your mobile filter on holiday if you don’t use an airline. It takes some time to filter the water. For 10 liters, you often have to leave it overnight, but the quality will improve a lot.
You also have smaller solutions that filter only a liter of water for example. Just make sure that the inside is not made of plastic. Otherwise we come back to the original problem of plastic in your water. And by ‘the inside’ I mean the part of the filter that touches the water, before and after filtering.

Companies often offer filters that you have to replace every 6 or 12 months. Please make sure that you think about that when you almost decide to buy one. A certain mobile filter might be cheap, but if you have to change the filter itself every few months or so, it might be better to look for one with a longer lasting filter.
And don’t just buy one without any research. Find out what it promises, compare prises, look for reviews and make sure you get a good warranty. The filter shouldn’t take out the good minerals from your water. Go for quality, not for cheap. Think about the cost of all the plastic bottles that you will not be buying from now on and put that money towards a good quality filter.

5. Water from natural sources

If you ask me, this is by far the best solution. To drink water directly from its source. It tastes fantastic and is incredibly clear. It doesn’t smell, there is no chlorine added to preserve it and it comes straight from mother earth. It always makes me so happy to fill up my glass bottles with the best water in the world. And it is for free. That is the fun part!
There are loads of free, public sources all around the world, but you have to know where to find them. For that reason, I am creating the natural sources application that you will find on this website soon.

Tips and tricks on using water from natural sources:

– Make sure that it is flowing water. Which means that you don’t have to open a tap for it. It has to flow. Sometimes it may look like a source, but it comes from a basin where they ‘stored’ the water and perhaps even added some preservatives.

– Make sure that the quality of the source you are using is checked. A lot of sources are fantastic in quality, but not all. If you’re not sure, ask the locals. Do they drink it? Do they like it? Trust me. Everybody knows if it is a good source.

– Don’t keep the source water in your bottle for a long period of time. The water is not desinfected like your tap water, so if it is contaminated, the microbes will multiply rapidly, increasing the chances of generating diseases. But trust me, this is the only disadvantage. Don’t let this stop you from enjoying one of the best things this world has to offer: clear natural spring water, directly from its source.

6. Only buy water in glass

Every country, every town and every store has a lot of water to sell. Unfortunately 95% of that water is still packed in plastic bottles.
But if you look, you will find bottles of glass, with water of excellent quality. Most of the time, they are more expensive than the plastic ones, but please think of the great advantages. The taste is so much better, Only natural. And you save a lot of plastic garbage.
In restaurants or bars you can always ask for water in a glass bottle. And if you are really into making a change, ask for a bottle of water without a straw.

Also be aware of where the water comes from too. Let’s say you have a choice between bottled water from a local source, or spring water from a mountain village 1200 miles away. And they are both bottled in glass. Take the one that comes the closest from the place where you are that moment. I personally think it is crazy to buy water from so far away. Imagine the transport, the production of the bottle and all the co2 emission that it caused. Only for a bottle of water. By the way, in a lot of restaurants and bars, it is also possible to just order a glass of tap water. It might even be for free if you’re also eating something.

Be aware that some bottles are meant to be re-used after you finish with it. If you buy the bottle in a store, you might have paid a deposit for the bottle. 25 cents or so. You can choose whether to bring it back (the producer will clean the bottle and use it for the next client), or to keep it. In the last case, you lost your deposit and the company will have to produce a new bottle. But then again, you have a bottle of glass in your hand that you can re-use over and over again. It’s up to you.

At work

You probably spend a long period of time of your life working. So wouldn’t it be nice to always have healthy water there too? Mention the list with solutions above to your boss and make him interested. Ask if he can supply spring water or non-plastic bottled water at work.
Or maybe he can even install a tap filter to improve the water quality.
Another thing that actually has to change everywhere is to replace the plastic throw-away cups for paper ones or even the simple solution that everybody brings his own cup or bottle. Make a zero waste solution for everybody!
If your boss is not interested, you can always take your own water from home. And who knows, maybe you planted a seed. Maybe he is not ready for it yet and needs some time to think about the idea. He might never have been thinking about this, so give him or her some time. But remind your boss that the improved health of the employees, will make a benefit for the company.

On holiday

Spend your next holiday close to a clear water source. In the mountains, for example, you can taste the real difference. Use the app on this website to find or add a location.
On holiday, you will probably find out that there is a lot of plastic bottled water around too. You will see it everywhere, but don’t let this seduce you to just do what everybody else is doing, just because it’s holiday and it’s only for one or two weeks. There will be places around where they sell glass bottled water for you or where you can refill your own bottle with healthy drinking water. Lead by example.

Living and moving

If you were already thinking of moving from the big city or somewhere else you love, consider going and living close to a natural water source, so you can always profit from water from nature. It doesn’t have to be far away. If you’re lucky, you might be close already.
A great place to live is a mountain area of course. You will find several springs there if you choose the right place.

But it doesn’t have to be the mountains. Springs appear everywhere around the world. Even in places close to the sea. I have met people that bought a piece of land with a spring on it. So they got themselves their own private healthy source.
Another thing that you can do if you are thinking of moving is to contact the town hall or the water company of the place you want to go to. Ask them for a report on the tap water from that area. Is it completely natural? Where does it come from? What did they add to it to preserve it? A lot of things to think about when you are hesitating between one place and the other.

Refill your bottle in a store

You may be living close to a location where you can refill your own bottle.
Most of the time, it’s spring water, but it can also be filtered tap water, Don’t just fill it up, but first ask where the water is coming from. Make sure, if you don’t want to go for the plastic taste, that it isn’t stored in a big plastic bottle , like the water coolers that you see when you are in the waiting room of a company or a hospital.
